About “Old Faithful”:
Iron City Distilling announces the release of “Old Faithful,” a limited‑edition finished rye whiskey. It is inspired by a remarkable piece of Western Pennsylvania brewing history.
The Barrel’s Story:
A local breweriana collector approached Iron City Distilling with a pre‑Prohibition era wooden beer keg. It was once used by Pittsburgh Brewing Company for Iron City Beer (founded 1861). The vessel survived for more than a century.
Restoration:
Iron City Distilling partnered with Barrel Mill for a painstaking restoration process. This included shaving down the interior, recharring the wood, and recoopering the barrel so it could once again hold liquid. The Barrel Mill team nicknamed the barrel “Old Faithful.”
The Whiskey:
The restored 15‑gallon barrel was filled with Iron City Distilling’s 2‑year Straight Bessemer Rye Whiskey. Due to the smaller barrel size and increased surface‑area‑to‑volume ratio, the whiskey developed character quickly. The team completed three separate finishing runs through the historic barrel.
The Result: A distinctive rye whiskey carrying layers of oak influence. Furthermore, it has a subtle connection to Western Pennsylvania’s rich brewing history.
