Founded by a group of committed family members, Achieva’s mission was to ensure children with disabilities had the same opportunities as all children, contributing to a nationwide movement against historical segregation.

Unique in western PA, Achieva provides comprehensive services across the entire lifespan through its affiliate organizations, including early intervention, diverse community living options, employment services, and special needs trusts. These direct supports are complemented by no-cost advocacy and family support—the foundational services of the organization.

Advocacy and Systemic Change

Achieva’s Advocacy work focuses on protecting individual rights and influencing policy. They lobby for critical legislative changes, such as higher wages for Direct Support Professionals (DSPs), and provide no-cost guidance and support to families navigating complex systems like special education. Their advocacy also extends to children with complex medical needs, promoting policies and resources that help families bring their children home from medical facilities with the support they need to thrive. This long-term effort drives systemic change, ensuring individuals access the services they are entitled to and creating a more equitable and dignified future.

Business Services Initiative

The Business Services Initiative is Achieva’s leading program for competitive, integrated employment. It provides comprehensive support, including personalized job coaching and embedding on-site Employment Specialists directly within partner businesses. This program has a dual impact: it provides the employee with purpose and economic independence, while businesses benefit from a loyal workforce that often leads to gains in employee retention and overall productivity.
