What is Cachaça in the Caipirinha Recipe?

Cachaça is a unique Brazilian spirit that serves as the essential base for the Caipirinha, Brazil’s national cocktail. Though often mistaken for rum, cachaça has a distinct flavor profile. It is distilled directly from fresh, fermented sugarcane juice, whereas most rums are made from molasses, a byproduct of the sugar-making process. This key difference gives cachaça a noticeably less sweet, more grassy, and subtly vegetal taste.
