They believe that health is more than just the absence of sickness. In turn, they feel that health is the well-being of the mind, body, and spirit in the individual and the community. Metro Community Health Center’s mission is to:
- To care for the whole person in a safe and also respectful setting.
- To encourage patients to partner with our clinicians and staff in planning their care.
- To respond to those needs with respect for the individual and their beliefs about health and healing.
- To be guided by the needs of our patients.
- To serve Wilkinsburg and the nearby communities by offering health care to all people, at every stage of life, without regard to their ability to pay.
- To serve the uninsured, underinsured, HIV positive, and the LGBT residents of the region.
Examples of Metro Community Health Center’s Mission
Metro’s outreach team plays a critical role in community engagement, attending over 50 events each year to bring health education, screenings, and essential resources directly to neighborhoods across the region. This consistent presence not only builds trust but also increases health literacy and connects residents to necessary healthcare services that they might not otherwise access. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Metro Community Health Center launched a massive vaccination and testing campaign, reaching thousands of residents. Beyond offering testing and vaccines, the campaign also focused on providing accurate information to combat misinformation and encourage preventive measures, ultimately helping to curb the virus’s spread locally.
Through school-based partnerships with districts like Wilkinsburg and Woodland Hills, Metro makes healthcare available right on school grounds, allowing students to receive care without needing to leave campus. This approach reduces absenteeism and supports students’ health, leading to improved academic outcomes as well. Additionally, Metro’s mobile clinic, in collaboration with partners like Pittsburgh Mercy, Casa San José, and local shelters, brings essential healthcare—including dental services—directly to underserved populations throughout the community. This outreach has led to a notable 30% increase in engagement with preventive and routine care among those facing barriers such as limited transportation options.
These initiatives demonstrate Metro’s commitment to creating real, measurable improvements in community health. By addressing healthcare access barriers and fostering strong, consistent relationships within the community, Metro is helping to uplift health outcomes for all.
