See the Autumn Leaves at Ohiopyle

Distance from Pittsburgh: 1 hour, 18 minutes

While the leaves are still colorful, plan a vacation weekend just an hour and a half from the city to see some of the most beautiful fall foliage around. What makes the town of Ohiopyle so great is that it truly has something anyone can enjoy. There are two Frank Lloyd Wright houses, Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob, nearby for the art and architecture buffs, whitewater rafting for the thrill seekers, or chill walks along the Youghiogheny River.

Burnt out from the election, holiday planning, and the general humdrum of day-to-day life? Treat yourself to a spa weekend getaway over Thanksgiving at luxury resort Nemacolin. Get Starstruck at Cherry Springs

As daylight savings time darkens the days, find some beauty in the darkness. Cherry Springs is one of the only International Dark Sky parks the country and the only one in the eastern United States. There, you’ll be able to see the shadow of the Milky Way and nearby galaxies in an array of options for viewing including campsites and a “stargazing arena” where you’re surrounded by untouched darkness.

Learn Some History in Harpers Ferry, WV

Distance from Pittsburgh: 3 hours 22 minutes

On the heels of the election, it may be time to re-examine in the bigger picture of American history. If you traveling with family, the kids might be ready for some teachable historic moments. Harpers Ferry was the site of major developments in the abolitionist movement during the Civil War and going there can be a reminder of how grassroots activism can make real change.  

Swallow Your Pride and Admit Cleveland is a Fun City

Not everyone is looking for a rural getaway over Thanksgiving break. For the college kids looking to get out of town and explore a new city, consider Cleveland. Look beyond the nickname “the Mistake on the Lake” and forget for a moment that it’s the home of the Cleveland Browns: The city has a fun and unique dining scene with abundant breweries and cafés in fun neighborhoods like Little Italy and The Flats. It also has a vibrant art scene with accredited galleries like Abattoir Gallery and a stellar museum with free admission. You also can’t go wrong with visiting the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Maybe it’s time for Pittsburgh and Cleveland to stop fighting and unite against the real enemy: Philadelphia.
