The annual Black River African Dance Fest is back! Balafon, founded by Mama Kadiatou Conte, brings back its annual festival as a local celebration of African arts and culture, connecting Pittsburgh in studios and on stages to global masters of traditional African dance and drum.
Black River African Dance Fest features a grand concert on Friday, October 17, premiering new works at Kelly Strayhorn Theater with workshops and talks at KST’s Alloy Studios on Saturday, October 18. Come shop for African goods at the Black River market, take in the show and classes, and experience the many ways African dance sparks joy and refreshes spirits.
This year marks what would have been Mama Kadiatou’s 70th birthday. In tribute to her lasting legacy, join Balafon in honoring the wisdom of the past and bringing forth new traditions.
