Futurity of the Womb: Myth of the Cyborg Kisaeng is a one-night-only experimental theater event. It reimagines Korean mythology through a feminist, sci-fi lens. The show combines live monologue, burlesque, shamanic ritual, and video art. As a result, it offers both a retelling of history and a bold vision of the future.
The performance, directed by C. Ryu and Kayla Tange, unfolds in four chapters. First, Mudang Jenn Kim invokes MAGO, Korea’s cosmic goddess, in a ritual that reclaims her power. Next, Kayla Tange merges burlesque with the story of Princess Bari to explore abandonment and adoption. Then, C. Ryu reimagines the gumiho, or demon-fox, as a cyborg through a monologue paired with dreamlike video projections. Finally, the evening ends with a communal ritual and dance party.
In addition, the show features original sound design from musicians in Los Angeles and San Francisco. It also includes a live recording from Kkiri Kkiri Samulnori, a queer Korean drumming circle. Together, these elements create a performance that is immersive, defiant, and unlike anything Pittsburgh has seen.
Content Warnings: nudity, strobing lights, loud sound, mentions of sex work, gore, and demonology.
