My Neighbor Totoro

If you haven’t yet become familiar with the delightful, wistful films of Studio Ghibli, there’s no better introduction than My Neighbor Totoro. The 1988 film follows a pair of sisters as they move to a rural home and encounter a series of friendly woodland spirits; the film, directed by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki, embodies the magic and wonder the studio is known for. And if you already love the film, it’s always worth seeing it on the big screen. Fathom Entertainment presents the film in several local multiplexes as part of its annual Studio Ghibli Fest.
Shawn Mullins
Tuesday, July 14, City Winery
Singer-songwriter Shawn Mullins’ hit Lullaby, from his breakthrough 1998 album Soul’s Core, topped the Mainstream Top 40 chart and turned Mullins into a crossover star. Far from being a one-song record, though, the Platinum-selling Soul’s Core is a gem, packed with memorable songs. Mullins re-arranged and re-recorded the tunes for the 2018 album Soul’s Core Revival, and will offer some of those new interpretations on Tuesday night at City Winery.

Sometimes, the simplest setups are the best. And Speed has a very simple setup: If the bus slows down, it’ll blow up. With iconic leading duo Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves leading the way (and dynamic director Jan De Bont at the helm), Speed became one of the most enjoyable action flicks of the ’90s. It’ll be on the screen this week at Row House Lawrenceville as part of ’90s Dad Action week, a lineup that also features The Fugitive, Blade, Last Action Hero and the Pittsburgh-made Striking Distance.
Inside Out
Thursday, July 16, Also Saturdays and Thursdays through August 15, Carnegie Museum of Art
Carnegie Museum of Art’s annual Inside Out celebration offers a series of outdoor events in the museum’s sculpture court, turning an always lovely part of the museum grounds into a block party. On Saturdays, that means family-friendly events and activities — but Thursday nights are for grown-ups, with food trucks and drinks, live music and more. This week’s lineup features musicians Good Dude Lojack and Malzof, a visit from the Gari Shoyu Sando Co. food truck and more.
Sherlock Holmes and the Web of Deceit from Pittsburgh Savoyards

In addition to their traditional performances at the Carnegie Carnegie, the 89-year-old performance troupe the Pittsburgh Savoyards presents some performances at a charming and intimate storefront theater in Bellevue. That space, the Margaret Partee Performing Arts Center, will host Sherlock Holmes and the Web of Deceit, a conspiratorial mystery adapted for the stage by Savoyards regular Robert Hockenberry. See the show this weekend or next — and, if you can’t make it out in person, the theater also offers livestream tickets. (If you’re going to Bellevue, schedule dinner beforehand at Lincoln Avenue Brewery — it’s just across the street.)

Pittsburgh’s own Lee Terbosic has taken his entertaining, masterful magic around the world, becoming a leading expert on Harry Houdini and an in-demand performer at prestigious venues including Los Angeles’ legendary Magic Castle. He’s also one of the guiding forces behind Downtown venue Liberty Magic — and he’ll present one of his signature shows, the comedic and dazzling In Plain Sleight, at the beloved space all month long.
Cyril Neville at Hartwood Acres
Sunday, July 19, Hartwood Acres
Percussionist and singer Cyril Neville is a titan of New Orleans music, having played with the legendary Meters and alongside brother Aaron in the Neville Brothers. Known by the appropriately regal sobriquet The Uptown Ruler, the two-time Grammy winner is a fixture at NOLA festivals and travels the world with a band versed in funk, rock and the Creole sound. Neville will perform for free at Hartwood Acres as part of the Allegheny County Summer Concert Series; it’s a can’t-miss show.
