About the Show:
City Theatre opens its 2026/2027 season with In Clay. This is a dazzling solo musical based on a true story. It follows Marie‑Berthe Cazin, an overlooked ceramic artist from the early 20th century.

The show comes to Pittsburgh after a sold‑out run at Signature Theater in Washington, D.C. Rebecca Simmonds wrote the book and lyrics. Jack Miles composed the music and lyrics. Matt Herbert contributed additional music. Kimberly Senior directs. Alex Finke stars. The Washington Post called it “tenacious and captivating.”

The story takes place in Paris in 1938. Marie awaits a visit from an estranged childhood friend. As she reflects on her life, we see her early days as a gifted protégée. We watch her husband rise to fame, partly by claiming her work as his own. We also see her endure the upheaval of World War I. Her unwavering spirit reveals beauty in the broken.

Moreover, about 50 ceramic pieces appear on stage. Local artists craft them through a partnership with Union Project.
