Kara Walker: Harper’s Pictorial History of the Civil War (Annotated)
The Frick Pittsburgh, March 1-May 25
A new exhibit is opening at The Frick Pittsburgh featuring narratives of racism during the Civil War that went unnoticed. Kara Walker’s Harper’s Pictorial History of the Civil War (Annotated) challenges the traditional stories of the Civil War. It consists of 15 powerful prints. Walker reimagines historical representations found in the 1866 anthology Harper’s Pictorial History of the Civil War by overlaying enlarged woodcut plates with her signature black silhouette figures.
