Winter break! It’s a child’s dream but a busy parent’s nightmare. Lessen the stress of juggling kids and work this break, pick out a workshop that focuses on joyous learning. You will be adding interesting experiences to their education. The kids will love it. Everyone will be happy!
Various museums throughout the city of Pittsburgh offer special winter break workshops to give kids a hands-on experience the kids may not get in school. If your daughter is into robotics, take her to a class where she’ll get to work with real robots. Or if your son is into painting, drop him off at the Carnegie Museum of Art for an exploration into various art mediums.

Make Lab: Needle Felting – Ages 8+

Kids ages 8 and older can head to the Museumlab’s latest workshop where they’ll learn needle felting. First they’ll learn about wool and its properties before creating their own masterpiece. Your child will come hope with a wool “painting” of a landscape, fuzzy monster, or anything their imagination can discover.
Tech Lab: Holiday Art Cards

Make a take-home card that helps all get into the holiday spirit. Through printmaking and mixed media art, you’re kids will learn how to make their visions come to life. Design them with reindeer, snowflakes, trees, snowmen, or whatever the holidays mean to you.
Day Off at the Museum

Spend the day exploring the Carnegie Museum of Art while participating in exciting activities designed to help your child grow as an artist. Children can spend their day off from school painting, printing, sculpting, and mixing media, in response to the art they’ll see at the museum. Through playful art and sensory challenges, kids will dive deeper into artful subjects.
Brick Engineers

Is your little one obsessed with Legos? Have them put their skills to the test in a day as a Lego Engineer. Kids will discover the science of simple machines, explore their creativity, and use the engineering design process, all to meet and overcome a range of Lego challenges. Cool Chemistry

Who is not amazed when chemical reactions occur, creating sparks, changing color, and bubbles? Your children will have the chance to learn all about chemistry in this hands-on workshop. They’ll experiment making concoctions out of everyday materials before creating their own snow globe to take home.
The Great Robot Race!

Racing robots might just be even better than racing cars. Each child will have a chance to control a robot through various challenges after learning its mechanics. See if you can navigate obstacles in a race course to finish on top!
Superhuman Science

Superheroes and even supervillains are here to teach your little one all about the science of superpowers. Explore famous characters and how their powers work. Then, use what you’ve learned to take on villains that have been taking over the science center.
Brickology

Take Legos beyond the basics with this workshop centered on constructing these building bricks in unique ways. Older kids can learn how to make 2D and 3D models out of regular Legos. They’ll be in awe as they construct a spinning top and even race wind-powered brick-mobiles
