Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival
Downtown Pittsburgh, Sept 19-22
This exciting festival combines ticketed events and free outdoor programming on Liberty Avenue near the August Wilson Center. PIJF celebrates the jazz history of the city as well as fostering emerging voices in the Pittsburgh jazz scene and beyond. Musicians from New York and Philadelphia flock to Pittsburgh on the festival’s “jazz train” specialty Amtrak rail.
Opening Night with Itzhak Perlman
Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Sept 21, 2024
Manfred Honeck leads the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in a one-night-only lineup of film music favorites along with legendary violinist Itzhak Perlman, performing live as PSO honors his commitment to music education and encouraging the next generation of musicians. Dedicated fans can also attend the gala the same night.
Rachmaninoff Symphonic Dances
Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Sept 27-29
Symphonic Dances is not so much a collection of dances as it is a series of dramatic tone poems, filled with moodily memorable melodies, eerie waltzes, and a triumphant, virtuosic finale. An audience favorite, violinist Augustin Hadelich reveals “something from a plane beyond ours,” performing Mendelssohn’s wonderfully lyric, virtuosic violin concerto.
Robby Krieger of The Doors
City Winery, Oct 6
Though Jim Morrison may no longer be with us, legendary guitarist Robby Krieger is preserving the band’s legacy. Krieger’s guitar has powered hits like “Light My Fire,” “The End,” and “People Are Strange,” and now you can hear him live at City Winery.
