The Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (WPSD) is a non-profit, tuition-free school with high academic expectations. Founded in 1869, WPSD provides quality educational services and a complete extracurricular program to deaf and hard-of-hearing children from Kindergarten through Grade 12. The school is located on 21 beautiful acres, seven miles from downtown. WPSD’s programs also include a statewide early intervention program – Choices for Children, the Scranton School for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Children, serving children in Northeast PA, along with preschool programs in Edinboro and Hershey. WPSD and its affiliated programs comprise the largest comprehensive center for deaf education in Pennsylvania.
Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf
We prepare children who are deaf and hard-of-hearing or have other communication needs for all aspects of life through high-quality, student-centered education and extracurricular programs in an All-Inclusive Communication Environment.
WPSD provides a wide range of programs in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields. For example, the robotics program at the school gives middle school and high school students the opportunity to participate in VEX robotics. In these courses, students learn how to build a robot for competition, program it to be autonomous, and craft strategies that satisfy game objectives in an effort to be successful in competition. In addition, the school offers a drone program that gives students practical experience in the programming, maintenance and operation of drones through classroom instruction and competition with students from other schools. Both of these academic opportunities help our students learn how to refine their critical thinking skills, including their ability to problem solve, as well as develop their teamwork and communication skills.
Readers can follow all of the wonderful achievements that our students are accomplishing by following WPSD on our social media channels (Facebook @WPSDPrograms; Instagram @WPSDProud) and liking and sharing our posts. They can also visit our website for more information about our school and students.
All donations are invested in the academic, athletic and extracurricular opportunities that WPSD offers to Deaf and Hard of-Hearing students.
