About the Show:
Step backstage—without leaving your seat. Quantum Theatre invites audiences into the joyful chaos of technical rehearsal, the most intense day in the life of a production. This is where lighting, sound, scenery, and special effects collide and ultimately come together.
Patrons wear wireless headsets to eavesdrop on the backstage drama: whispered cues, mounting tension, witty banter, and quiet problem‑solving. Nerves fray. Passions run hot. The lunacy of the creative process shines in anticipation of opening night.
Inspired by years of observing tech rehearsals, playwright Anne Washburn gathered fragments of overheard conversations—stress, humor, intimacy—and shaped them into a moving love letter to the art form. Audiences experience a play‑within‑a‑play: the comedic messiness of a contemporary tech rehearsal for a Victorian melodrama.
About the Director:
Andrew William Smith is Associate Professor of Acting and Associate Area Chair of Acting/Music Theater at Carnegie Mellon University. Pittsburgh audiences remember his direction of Quantum’s Scenes from an Execution (2024) and his performances in The River, The Gun Show, Far Away, and more.
