Jeff Goldblum and the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra
October 6, Heinz Hall
Lovingly (and somewhat comically) named after a family friend of Jeff Goldblum’s, the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra is not quite as grandiose as a full orchestra — there are only six players, for one thing — but they’ll be joined by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra to fully round out the sound. This is a homecoming show for Jeff, as he grew up in neighboring Homestead; while acting is clearly his main discipline, Jeff is no slouch on both the keys & vocals. The program consists of bits of both interspersed with witty banter aplenty. Most importantly, straight-ahead jazz fused with symphonic elements makes for a delightful sonic amalgam.
MC Lyte
October 12, City Winery Pittsburgh
Was anybody in the crowd the night I was coerced into reciting an MC Lyte verse in front of hundreds of attendees at Spirit … with Lyte herself right next to me on stage? Oy vey! It really happened — check my Instagram for visual proof. Some of my fondest hip-hop memories transport me back to the year 1988; I was 15 and engrossed in the culture on many levels. That was the year Lyte dropped her debut LP, Lyte as a Rock. Fast-forward nearly four decades and Lyte is still giving us consistent musical output. She is also an omnipresent voiceover force, with her distinctive voice gracing the Grammys, BET Awards and numerous commercial campaigns. She was also recently selected for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame — so this run will act as her unofficial Road To The HOF Tour (the ceremony is set for November in Los Angeles).
Smokey Robinson
October 23, Citizens Live at The Wylie
86-year-old Smokey Robinson is scheduled to play one of the early shows at the newly constructed venue that sits at the lower Hill District — and pays homage to the rich musical and cultural history of Wylie Avenue (check the WQED documentary Wylie Avenue Days for more context). It’s only fitting that he grace a stage named for Black excellence — and it’s doubly fitting, in that Smokey is a part-time resident of Pittsburgh. His wife is a local, and they’ve owned a house here for a number of years. So if you bump into Smokey at Trader Joe’s, don’t be surprised. Smokey’s pen game is just as mighty as his crooning ability, having written songs for The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, The Four Tops and countless others.
It’s unbelievable that he’s still on the road and releasing new albums (as recently as last year) at this stage of his career. Smokey is a true powerhouse.
Sting
November 6-7, Citizens Live at The Wylie
An Englishman in Pittsburgh! The mononymous Sting is universally beloved; you can put him on the same tier as fellow one-named artists such as Madonna, Prince and Sade. (Maybe there is something to be said for keeping a name simple?) The way Sting injected reggae into pop masterpieces was subtle — but so pleasing to the ear. I know we will never get another full Police reunion, so this tour will have to suffice — but how does one truncate more than 50 years of tunes into two hours? You’ll have to be present to witness such a feat in the making. It’s not often we get treated to a show featuring an icon of our time in such a small space; with a capacity of only 4000, it is certainly the most quaint of spaces that you will take in a once-a-lifetime phenom of an artist.
Jodeci
November 11, Citizens Live at The Wylie
Jodeci is one of those groups that perfectly embody a sound. When we think of the halcyon days of ’90s R&B, they are likely the group that comes up; they ushered in the definitive new sound for the genre at the time. Alongside their labelmate Mary J. Blige, it was Jodeci that ushered in a hip-hop/street aesthetic to R&B; that grittiness of a boom-bap backdrop melted beautifully into more traditional, lush vocals. It was a recipe that went on to spawn many copycat groups — and inspire generations to follow. They have been notably absent from the studio over the last 10 years, so while we won’t get much in the way of new releases from the quartet, we can listen to a review of their past chart-toppers. There are plenty.
Spanish Harlem Orchestra
December 19, MCG Jazz Hall
Do yourself a favor: Head to your favorite streaming service and take a listen to the Spanish Harlem Orchestra’s take on the classic Hector Lavoe piece La Banda. I’ve been weaving this track in and out of DJ sets seamlessly for 20 years and it has never cleared the floor, regardless of what proceeds it. That alone should speak volumes to the powerful force of the SHO. There is something about that Nuyorican soul that just induces movement; sitting still is not an option at one of their shows. The last time this Grammy-winning collective brought their vibrant live show to our fair city was at the Pittsburgh Jazz Fest back in 2023; it’s time they returned for an encore.
