Movie theaters are an oasis away from the world outside. Whatever chaos is happening, blazing heat or pouring rain, sitting down in that cozy darkness and watching the screen lights flicker on is a way to escape it. Pittsburgh’s indie movie theaters provide solace and entertainment with both unique and experimental film selections, new releases, and classic movies. Most also have curated bar programs that add to the experience if you’re on a date or simply just want to sip a shaken not stirred martini along with 007 or a White Russian along with The Dude. Or, try some of the TABLE‘s movie-themed cocktails at home.

Row House Cinema

4115 Butler Street

Row House started in Lawrenceville on Butler Street and is now expanding to a second location in Dormont, at the historic Hollywood theater. They’re known for their quirky selection of both new and old movies on weekly themes. Beer and cider from nearby Bierport and its proximity to Lawrenceville restaurants makes it a great night out destination.  

The Manor Theatre

The Manor is a part of East End history as one of the oldest movie theaters in Pittsburgh. It’s the ultimate cozy movie theater on a rainy Pittsburgh night. Their bar service is also great. You can get The Dude’s signature White Russian at their bar, along with another cinematic cocktails, making for a great after-dinner drink. Plus, you can bring your drinks and snacks into the theater with you, so no hiding bottles of wine in your coat on the way in.

The Parkway Theater & Film Lounge

Along with a 45-seat theater, hidden gem The Parkway also has a bar and restaurant in its building so you can enjoy both bar bites and more unique items like crêpes and gyros before the movie. The bar also functions separately with trivia nights, live music, and other performances like burlesque shows and stand-up comedy.

The Oaks

310 Allegheny River Boulevard

On the far side of the Allegheny,  The Oaks is both a movie theater and an event space and music venue. They show classics like The Big Lebowski and Breakfast at Tiffany’s alongside live events like a disco-themed dance party. You can rent the theater out for private experiences if you want, as well, and for a small price, you can get your friends’ names on the marquee.

The Harris Theater

809 Liberty Avenue

Downtown’s Harris Theater often shows art house or experimental films as well as new releases. Film restoration collective Pittsburgh Sound + Image frequently shows their restoration projects there. Independent film festivals like the Allegheny Sport + Outdoor Film Festival also have recently used it as a venue.
