Giving Guide 2024: City Theatre

City Theatre is Pittsburgh’s artistic home for bold, contemporary plays that challenge, engage, and inspire diverse audiences. Celebrating 50 years of storytelling, the company is rooted in the historic South Side, where its four-building cultural campus serves as a hub for creativity and community connection.

City Theatre

City Theatre produces a season of innovative regional and world premieres, showcases emerging voices through its Young Playwrights Festival, and supports the creation of new works through a season-long reading series and the annual Momentum Festival. Beyond the stage, the company empowers students of all abilities to explore and express their creativity through playmaking and theater arts, fostering the next generation of storytellers.

The organization’s mission is to provide an artistic home for the development and production of contemporary plays that engage and challenge a diverse audience. Its vision is to become the best mid-sized theater in America. It’s guided by core values of Community, Collaboration, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Accessibility, and Creativity.

For 25 years, the Young Playwrights Festival has provided a platform for aspiring student writers to see their stories brought to life. This helps instill confidence and nurturing creativity. The Momentum Festival has introduced audiences to groundbreaking works in progress. Many of these have gone on to full productions, amplifying underrepresented voices. Additionally, City Theatre’s regular season features bold and relevant plays that spark meaningful conversations and emotional connections among audiences. Through these projects, the company has become a catalyst for personal growth, community dialogue, and cultural enrichment.
