Giving Guide 2023: Literacy Pittsburgh

For those who were left behind and for those who just arrived, Literacy Pittsburgh creates a pathway to the American Dream.

Through one-to-one tutoring and small classes, Literacy Pittsburgh helps adults and families from around the world and around the corner gain the skills needed to grow as workers, parents, and neighbors.

Since 1982, Literacy Pittsburgh has been creating better lives through learning in the greater Pittsburgh area. With the generous support of the local community, students gain economic self-sufficiency and a brighter future for themselves and their families.

At Literacy Pittsburgh, adult learners earn a high school credential, learn English, obtain US citizenship, go on to college and better jobs, and improve their reading, writing, math, or computer skills. Programs for children and families foster a love of learning and create a foundation for success in school. All services are offered free of charge to individuals in Allegheny County and Beaver County.

A key to success is personalized attention. Through entrance testing and goal setting, students are able to receive the education best suited to them. Both classroom teachers and volunteer tutors foster a safe, supportive environment and take the time to ensure that each student masters the knowledge and skills they need to meet their goals.

Danielle, who recently earned her GED credential, says “The teachers were so helpful and hands-on. I appreciate the time they took with me to ensure I was grasping the knowledge.”

She is about to enroll in an esthetician program, fulfilling a longtime dream.

By supporting Literacy Pittsburgh as a volunteer tutor or a donor, you can make a difference for individuals, their children, the workforce, and the greater Pittsburgh region – creating better lives for us all. Visit www.literacypittsburgh.org to learn more.
