From as early as 1748, historians have found evidence of trading posts in Western PA serving as makeshift boarding houses – before Pittsburgh was even Pittsburgh. Today, Western Pennsylvania is home to many beautiful historic hotels perfect for a quick getaway. Whether you’re looking for a romantic escape or an historic experience, these hotels will all provide an incredible home away from home.
Pennsylvania’s Historic Hotels Get You Away from the Chaos

Polymath Park
187 Evergreen Lane, Acme
As a Pittsburgh native, I grew up visiting Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob, but it wasn’t until recently that I learned you can actually spend the night in a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed house. The grounds of Polymath Park are home to four relocated homes — two designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, and two by his student, Peter Berndston. Make sure to book dinner at Treetops Restaurant where you can enjoy a decadent meal in a private treehouse. Only 1.5 hours from Pittsburgh, Polymath Park should be at the top of your list.

Omni Bedford Springs
2198 Sweet Root Road, Bedford
I’m a sucker for an historic hotel, and the original iteration of the Omni Bedford Springs dates to 1806, making it one of Pennsylvania’s oldest hotels. Today, the modern property has a little something for everyone. Kids will love the indoor and outdoor pools, as well as the multiple dining options. Couples can relax in the spa, enjoy a romantic dinner, and cozy up by the fire pits. The nearby town of Bedford is oozing with charm, filled with locally owned shops, cafes, and a picturesque town square.

Mansions on Fifth
5105 Fifth Avenue, Shadyside
If you live in Pittsburgh, odds are you’ve driven past the stretch
of mansions that line Fifth Avenue in Shadyside. But did you know one of them is a bed & breakfast? The Mansions on Fifth is a dream Pittsburgh staycation: historic, charming, and right in the heart of the city’s East End. My perfect night would consist of a leisurely dinner at Girasole, followed by ice cream at Treat on Walnut Street and a 10-minute walk back to the Mansions on Fifth.
The Historic Summit Inn
101 Skyline Drive, Farmington
Each time I go to the Laurel Highlands, I pass the Historic Summit Inn Resort at the very top of the mountain. Dating back to 1907, this historic hotel is a great place to take in beautiful views while also enjoying the amazing outdoor activities the Laurel Highlands have to offer. It’s just 20 minutes from Ohiopyle, so be sure to bring your bikes with you! I’d recommend driving up and enjoying the pool at the hotel, having dinner on-site, then spending the next day biking the GAP trail, whitewater raftinon the Yough, and/or enjoying a delicious lunch or coffee at Bittersweet Cafe.
Nemacolin
1001 Lafayette Drive, Farmington
Without doubt, Nemacolin is one of the most beautiful historic hotels in the region. If you’re looking to truly treat yourself — whether for a special celebration or just because — this is the place to do it. Spend the day at the spa, see the art collection, hit the golf course, or go off-roading in a Jeep before indulging in an unforgettable meal. Nemacolin is the definition of luxury, and if you live in Pittsburgh, it’s a must-visit at least once in your life.

Buhl Mansion Inn
422 E State Street, Sharon
While you may not equate Sharon, PA, with a romantic getaway, the Buhl Mansion Inn is here to prove you wrong! Located just over an hour north of Pittsburgh, this 1896 mansion is pure elegance, with ornate rooms perfect for an anniversary or birthday celebration. But the main attraction here is the spa. My ideal visit to the Buhl Mansion Inn includes a spa package, a cozy night at the inn, and a scenic detour through Moraine State Park on my way back to the city.
Foxburg Inn
20 Main Street, Foxburg
As someone who grew up in Pittsburgh, I’m always drawn
to places with riverfront views — and that includes the Foxburg Inn. With the Allegheny River as its backyard, this boutique hotel is the perfect spot for a relaxed, nature- filled escape. My recommendation would be to visit in the summer or fall, when the trees are lush, or the foliage is in full swing. Just an hour away from the city, it’s an ideal option for a quick escape.

The Lodge at Woodloch
109 River Birch Lane, Hawley
Nestled in the scenic Poconos, The Lodge at Woodloch is my top pick for those interested in wellness. Whether you’re looking for a healthy reset or just to indulge in some self-care, you can choose from their extensive lineup of wellness-focused experiences — from guided nature walks to fitness classes and cooking workshops. The Lodge at Woodloch’s rates are all-inclusive, so you can take advantage of as many classes as you’d like, in addition to their health-focused dining options that feature locally grown produce. It’s worth the drive.

Federal Pointe Inn
75 Springs Ave, Gettysburg
Many native Pittsburghers associate Gettysburg with childhood field trips. If that sounds like you, you’re overdue for a visit to one of the most charming towns (and inns) in the state. The Federal Pointe Inn leans into the town’s history with historic-inspired rooms and an on-site antique shop. It’s located in the heart of Gettysburg, so it’s the perfect home base for a history-centric getaway. Download the free Adams County Pour Tour passport and visit the region’s breweries, cideries, meaderies, and wineries!
Lodge at Glendorn
1000 Glendorn Drive, Bradford
Originally a private family retreat, this hidden gem in Northern PA only has 16 accommodations — mostly standalone cabins — set on 1,500 acres of land. Originally built in 1927, it remained a private retreat until 1995. Today, it’s the perfect spot for a quiet, nature-filled weekend. You can explore the on-site trails and then cap off your day with a meal at the lodge’s restaurant. If I were planning the trip, I’d pair my stay with a stop at Kinzua Bridge State Park along the way and a hike in the Allegheny National Forest.
