Spend Black Friday in Pittsburgh in Luxury
A Mink at Carl W. Herrmann Furs and a Drink at The Warren
Carl W. Herrmann Furs is, sadly, on its way out. This historic Pittsburgh business has clothed many Rust Belt elite since 1900. But at the end of 2024, it will be shutting its doors. The good news, however, is that this means they are having a super sale. Everything is up to 60% off including mink jackets and ponchos, leather gloves, fabrics, and home décor. Yes, this markdown means things that are $4000 are now $2500, so it’s not exactly affordable, but it’s a good deal and…it’s the last chance you’ll have to shop there.
Once you’ve donned your mink coat, sachet over to The Warren Bar and Burrow, just a stone’s throw away on 7th Street. If you’re wearing fur and leather, you should get something upscale to match, like a nice bottle of Reserve Terra d’Oro Zinfandel or The Warren’s signature Old-Fashioned with rich, smoky Bonded whiskey. The Warren’s unique highball with Japanese whisky could make for a refreshing indulgence after you’ve mixed up your personal style with an accessory you’ll probably have for the rest of your life. Also, you’re unlikely to run into any militant animal rights activists at The Warren, so show off your fur judgment-free.
Turn McKnightmare into a Dream
Our editor-in-chief Keith Recker doesn’t put much stock in Black Friday, but his secret is the much-maligned McKnight Road outlets. Yes, driving on McKnight Road is the cause of a potential stress aneurysm, but you may find some bargains. “If I do venture out on Black Friday, I will go to the Saks Fifth Avenue outlet, Off Fifth on McKnight Road. They have been known to have some nice deals on decent sweaters and shoes. I admit that I have found a gift or two and some key stocking stuffers there in the past.”
After that, he heads to Rico’s. “I have a soft spot for Rico’s. I have decades of memories of family dinners there, all of them jolly. The food is classic Italian American. Fried Calamari and salads are great starters, followed by pasta in red sauce and a glass of decent red wine. The interior is, to me, like a time capsule from the early 90s…and so is the warm welcome and friendly service. After a nice, leisurely lunch, I will head home for a nap…and I will give thanks for simple holiday traditions that bring comfort and help me keep up with the pace of this crazy life we all live.”
Focus on the Artisan Gifts for Black Friday
One way to make Black Friday less crazy is to turn away from the outlets and retail and towards local artists. If you want to avoid Black Friday entirely, as our Director of Operations Star Laliberte does, try a drive out to Pleasant Unity (with that name, you’re off to a great start!), to shop for handmade gifts at fdp studios. Francis and Lynn DeFabo create a cozy, welcoming space to browse ceramics, candles, tableware, and all manner of decorations and tchotchkes. Also, the DeFabos have been known to offer a glass of wine or coffee on-the-house while you shop.
On the way out to Pleasant Unity or back into Pittsburgh, a stop in Jeannette at DeNunzio’s makes for a satisfying Italian meal in a cozy environment. Or, grab some Italian pizzelles at DeLallo’s in preparation for the holidays and snack on one (or two) in the car.
A Mall Trip to South Hills Village and a Meal at Bistro 19
Online Editor Kylie Thomas prefers to get grab bag gifts at a mall and then head to a diner or low-key bistro with her mom. This year, Kylie is heading to Eddie Bauer at South Hills Village for those clothing deals, then heading up into Mt. Lebanon for a meal.
Beyond the normal outlet options, brand new department store in South Hills Village, Von Maur, is also sure to have some high-end items. Once you’ve filled your bags and checked off your list, head into Mt. Lebanon for a meal at Bistro 19, where Greg Gazica’s all-star team can turn any stressful Black Friday Pittsburgh shopping day into a luxury experience.
