Special Olympics Pennsylvania (SOPA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. SOPA’s mission is to empower individuals with intellectual disabilities to discover new strengths, abilities, skills, and success through the power of sports. We offer a wide range of programs that promote physical fitness, teamwork, and confidence, while also fostering inclusion and acceptance within the community. Through sports, health, and education initiatives, SOPA aims to break down barriers and create a more inclusive society for all.

Special Olympics Pennsylvania

The mission at Special Olympics Pennsylvania (SOPA) is to provide year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Through these opportunities, they aim to demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community. This mission is rooted in the belief that everyone deserves to be included, respected, and celebrated for their abilities.

Special Olympics Pennsylvania (SOPA) has undertaken numerous impactful projects that have significantly enhanced the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities and fostered a more inclusive community. One of the cornerstone initiatives is the Unified Champion Schools program, which promotes social inclusion by bringing together students with and without intellectual disabilities through sports and youth leadership opportunities. This program has reached over 400 schools across Pennsylvania, creating a positive school culture where acceptance and respect thrive. The impact of this program has been profound, leading to improved academic performance, increased social engagement, and the breaking down of stereotypes and barriers among students.
