The Seventh Seal
Monday, July 6, Also Daily from July 3-9, Row House Lawrenceville
Ingmar Bergman’s 1957 classic The Seventh Seal is so powerful that sources ranging from The Village Voice to the Vatican have ranked it among the best films ever made. It’s an allegory that pits an errant knight against Death himself in a game of chess; it’s also relatively short, at just 97 minutes. That makes it perfect for Row House’s Keep it (Under) 100 series, a week of films that clock in at less than 100 minutes. Also on the docket at the Lawrenceville theater: David Lynch’s surreal Eraserhead, Paul Thomas Anderson’s Punch Drunk Love and the Coen Brothers’ Fargo.
Benson Boone
Tuesday, July 7, PPG Paints Arena
The 24-year-old hitmaker best known for the inescapable hit Beautiful Things, is embarking on a massive arena tour — and it kicks off in Pittsburgh. PPG Paints Arena will host the first date of Boone’s Wanted Man tour. We have a full guide to the show for you to maximize your enjoyment of the evening — but plan to arrive early, as no opening act has yet been announced. Boone could be taking the stage fairly early in the evening.
We Hold These Truths: An American Potluck
Wednesday, July 8, Also July 9, 11, 12, 24, 30 and 31
RealTime Arts is offering a play and a meal — and both are secondary to the dialogue among attendees. In the We Hold These Truths series, a 10-minute play derived from community conversations kicks off the evening, before audience members are split up into small groups to enjoy a potluck-style meal. (Don’t worry; the organizers will pre-select certain guests to bring the food, so you’re not responsible for the menu.) A group conversation will follow the food. It’s a growing theater model that prioritizes communication over passive observation — and RealTime Arts, known for their community-focused productions, are the perfect artists to facilitate it.
The Pelican Brief
Thursday, July 9, Also July 19, Lindsay Theater
There was a moment in time when no airplane took off without a half-dozen passengers reading paperback novels by John Grisham. Back in the ’90s — the time period of the Lindsay Theater’s summer classics series, Nine on ’90s — the legal thrillers by the prolific writer were often adapted into big-budget movies; The Pelican Brief, directed by Alan J. Pakula and released in 1993, starred the A-list duo of Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts. And speaking of the ’90s …
Pittsburgh Honky Tonk: ’90s Night
Friday, July 10, Bottlerocket Social Hall
The long-running Pittsburgh Honky Tonk series — previously known as Honky-Tonk Jukebox — brings old-school western charm to the bars of the Steel City. You’ll get a line dancing lesson before an all-star lineup of local musicians, led by local standout Jon Bindley, launches into a set of crowd-pleasing country favorites. The theme for this month’s party at Bottlerocket Social Hall: ’90s Night, throwing it back to an era when Nashville was starting to learn a thing or two from pop stars (but still held on to its roots).
Fantasia with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra
Saturday, July 11, Also July 10, Heinz Hall
Disney’s 1940 anthology film Fantasia was a landmark in the development of animation. It was also, for many, an introductory course in classical music; the film features animation set to Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, the Nutcracker suite, pieces by Bach and Beethoven and more. This weekend, the PSO will present segments of both Fantasia and its long-delayed sequel, Fantasia 2000, with live accompaniment. Moon Doh serves as guest conductor for the program.
Iron City Pittsburgh Music Festival
Sunday, July 12, Also July 11, Pittsburgh Brewing Company
What better place for a two-day celebration of Pittsburgh rock and roll than Iron City Brewing? The iconic brewery invites a slate of favorite rockers to their home base in Creighton for an all-weekend lineup of hits. Saturday’s show will feature the likes of the Gathering Field, Norm Nardini, the Sun King Warriors and more; Sunday, look for Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers, Billy Price and more — including an acoustic, indoor lineup featuring Chet Vincent, Ashley Marina and other songsmiths.
