Giving Guide 2024: Trying Together

Trying Together is a trusted early childhood nonprofit based out of Southwestern Pennsylvania that has been supporting the work of early childhood for the last 60 years.

Trying Together

This organization supports high-quality care and education for young children by providing advocacy, community resources, and professional growth opportunities for the needs and rights of children, their families, and the individuals who interact with them. Trying Together works regionally (in Southwestern Pennsylvania) and takes its expertise and models to statewide and national audiences.

The Trying Together Board of Directors, staff, and community partners are currently working together to meet their 2023-2027 strategic roadmap goals, and have had the following impact in recent years:

  • The Homewood Early Learning Hub & Family Center has provided diapers and formula for hundreds of families.
  • The Buzzword initiative distributed 2,350 BUZZ Boxes throughout the Allegheny County Family Center Network and via other community agencies and events.
  • Requested approximately 5,000 Developmentally Appropriate Parenting (DAP) card sets.
  • The DAP Resource webpages were viewed 449,276 times, with “Types of Family Structures” being the most popular resource
  • In January 2024, Trying Together commenced its fourth Early Childhood Education (ECE) Advocacy Fellowship. Throughout the year, fellows convened monthly, focusing on acquiring public policy knowledge, enhancing leadership skills, and cultivating their voices as advocates for early childhood education.

As the quality partner of the ELRC Region 5 since 2019, Trying Together staff have supported quality improvements for more than 600 licensed child care providers and more than 1,000 relative care providers throughout Allegheny County.
