What To Do In Pittsburgh This Weekend
Camp Carnegie
Friday, August 7 | Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Oakland
Turns out, summer camp is way more fun when everyone’s old enough to order s’mores cocktails. On Friday night, the Carnegie Museum of Natural History becomes an adults-only nostalgia fest called Camp Carnegie, where you can relive all your favorite camp traditions—only this time with a cash bar. Roam the museum by flashlight, swap stories around a faux campfire, craft friendship bracelets and beaded bug lanyards with the museum’s Invertebrate Zoology team, sharpen your soccer skills with Pittsburgh Riverhounds players, and pick up wilderness wisdom from Pittsburgh Park Rangers. While we won’t shame you for wearing that bug lanyard on Monday, we can’t vouch for your coworkers.
PONY League World Series
Friday, August 7–Wednesday August 12 | Washington
Right now, the best baseball players in the world are warming up in Washington, Pennsylvania. They’re middle schoolers battling it out in the PONY League World Series, a six-day slugfest that kicks off Friday and features 10 championship teams from across the globe. Founded in Washington in 1951 for boys who had outgrown Little League, PONY baseball celebrates its 75th anniversary this year, and counts Andrew McCutchen, Cal Ripken Jr., and Nolan Ryan among its most famous alumni. Opening weekend features a home run derby, a fastest-runner competition, themed nights—and a chance to scout the draft class of 2035.
Heinz History Center Bocce Tournament & Festival
Saturday, August 8 | Acrisure Stadium South Plaza
The loudest sports arguments in Pittsburgh this weekend won’t throw down at a Steelers practice—they’ll erupt over a little white pallino ball at Heinz History Center’s annual Bocce Tournament & Festival. Now in its 15th year, the tournament brings four-person teams to Acrisure Stadium for a day of surprisingly fierce competition, as they battle for an ornate trophy and a year’s worth of bragging rights. The fundraiser, benefiting the museum’s Italian American Program, also includes Italian food, live music, and lots of opportunities to cheer from the sidelines. Don’t stress if you’ve never played—or even watched—bocce before: You’ll learn the rules in about three minutes, and start disputing close calls at around four minutes.
Barrel & Flow Festival
Saturday, August 8 | Strip District
Once a year on an August Saturday, Pittsburgh becomes the country’s capital of Black-owned craft beer. Barrel & Flow—the first and largest festival in the country dedicated to Black-owned breweries—brings nearly 30 of those businesses to the Burgh to pour everything from hazy IPAs and crisp lagers to barrel-aged stouts and one-off collaborations you won’t find anywhere else. Beyond the beers, expect live bands and DJs, visual artists creating work throughout the day, chefs and food vendors, rising comedians, writers, and more than 100 Black-owned small businesses.
