Originally from Illinois, Taylor Mezo now calls Pittsburgh home. Luckily for all of us, that means that we can find local shops stocked with her colorful and iconic ceramics.
Taylor Mezo Brings a Pop of Color with Her Ceramics
Taylor’s work is a mix of sculpture and functionality, with bold marks drawn upon organic forms. For her, the earthenware slabs come together to evoke memories of places that she’s traveled, with a retro vibe baked in. Each piece has an identity of its own. This allows you to collect a cohesive body of work while also bringing some personality to your table settings.
From cups to candlesticks, there is something for everyone in Taylor’s offerings. Personally, I’m a fan of her Gentle Geometry line, with a large but varied pattern that carries throughout each piece. We have an entire section of our cupboard dedicated to her mugs. I always enjoy seeing which house guest feels drawn to which of the pieces!
Finding Inspiration in Pittsburgh
Taylor told me that she credits a residency at Touchstone Center for Crafts with giving her the time and space that she needed to work out the aesthetic that prevails in her work today. Another inspiration for her work comes from vintage bicycles, making Bicycle Heaven a frequent Pittsburgh destination for Taylor.
