Everything You Need to Know About Trunk Shows

While Millennials and Gen Z are well-acquainted with the buzz of pop-up shops, many might not know this concept’s classic counterpart: the trunk show. Historically, designers shipped their collections in actual trunks to stores, but today, whether items arrive in a trunk or garment bag, the concept remains the same.

Everything You Need to Know About Trunk Shows

“Though the term ‘trunk show’ may seem intimidating, it’s a delightful shopping experience,” explains Lisa Slesinger, women’s buyer and co-owner of Larrimor’s. “It counters the modern routine of ordering online, trying on at home, and returning items. The personalized service at a trunk show often amazes first-timers who didn’t realize shopping could be so tailored to their needs.”

We spoke with Lisa to explore the enduring appeal of trunk shows in the digital shopping era and why they continue to offer a unique and exclusive way to curate both men’s and women’s wardrobes.

What Exactly is a Trunk Show?

A trunk show brings an entire selection of a designer’s upcoming season’s collection temporarily to a store. Larrimor’s trunk shows feature men’s made-to-measure and custom clothing; men’s and women’s designer and contemporary clothing, jewelry, handbags, and men’s shoes. It’s an exciting and different way to shop. You can come in at your convenience or make an appointment to walk through the collection with one of our personal stylists or brand representative. At a Larrimor’s trunk show, expect not only a broader selection of items than usual but also unique pieces you won’t find in other specialty or department stores in the area. A larger selection and size range is also offered as garments are very often made specifically for you, so size is never an issue.

Why Attend?

Trunk shows offer an enjoyable way to broaden your fashion horizons, discover new trends, and appreciate the craftsmanship behind beautiful products. The items showcased are often unique, giving you the opportunity to invest in rare statement pieces.

They are also perfect for those with challenging fits. At a trunk show, you can try on clothes and receive complimentary in-store alterations on full-price purchases. The expertise from both the brand and Larrimor’s can make a significant difference.

Trunk shows provide access to exclusive brands and styles that are typically unknown to the general public. For those who value individuality, this is a chance to find something that feels bespoke and is unlikely to be seen on anyone else. It’s a true expression of personal style.

Why Shop at a Trunk Show?

Shopping at a trunk show is also convenient. Lisa says, “A few times a year, you can come in when it suits you, even outside regular store hours, and we’ll help you find something special.” Attending a pre-fall show, for example, gets you ahead of the season and the crowd. Finally, with a focus on quality and durability, a trunk show is a deliberate way to build a timeless wardrobe. No matter your life stage, you’re creating a sustainable and stylish closet you can rely on.

“A trunk show is also ideal for finding special occasion attire that fits perfectly,” Lisa notes. “For instance, if a brand offers a sleeveless evening gown, we can suggest modifications. Or, for an athletic man struggling to find pants that fit his thighs, we can custom-make a pair that suits his physique. It’s all about making people feel fabulous.”

How Do the Shows Operate?

Trunk Show Collections are available in the store for a limited period, from a couple of days to a maximum of two weeks. Anyone can attend without any obligation to buy.

Larrimor’s offers validated parking at 3 PNC garage. Upon arrival, you’ll be warmly welcomed and directed to the trunk show area. After browsing, one of our stylists will bring the samples you like to the fitting room for try on to determine the best size. If custom garments are needed, your measurements will be taken and sent to the design house to be created. A deposit is then made to place your order. We will contact you when your items arrive; and any necessary minor alterations can be done by Larrimor’s in-house tailoring team. If an item doesn’t work out, Larrimor’s will help you find an alternative or offer store credit.

When Are the Shows Held?

The show season peaks from mid-August to mid-May, with events almost every week at Larrimor’s. Some trunk shows allow you to walk out with purchases immediately, while pre-season shows have longer lead times.
