Salem’s Market in the Strip District Is Back Open

Salem’s Market has long been a one-stop shop for falafel, shawarma, burgers, baklava, or just a fun and friendly atmosphere. But over the past six months, the butcher, grocery store, and food court at their original Strip District location were closed for renovations. As of the beginning of September, Salem’s is once again open for business!

New Look, Same Quality at Salem’s Market in the Strip District

The space is looking cleaner, brighter, and even more delicious than before. They’ve restocked their shelves, put in new refrigeration and new furnishing, and it even appears that they have new floors. You can get fresh produce and meat in a fresher, brighter space. Salem’s originally started in Oakland in 1983 before moving to the Strip.

Its original owner, Massaud Salem, came to Pittsburgh from Libya in 1977. The current location opened in 2010. It’s now Pittsburgh’s largest halal food operation and has the mission that no one should leave hungry. Other than closing on Friday for prayer from 1 p.m.-2 p.m., Salem’s is open 365 days a year.

Locations Across the City

During the Strip District store’s closure, Salem’s opened up a new location in the Hill District, adding new grocery options in the neighborhood. It also has one storefront in Oakland as part of Carnegie Mellon’s Scotty’s Market campus grocery store for local students.

Much of the buzz around shopping in the Strip District focuses on Penn Avenue Fish Market, Wholey’s, or Penn Mac. But we think Salem’s has some of the most affordable and best quality meat in the neighborhood. One of their Instagram posts shows the store’s colorful mural façade with the caption “If I send this, it means we’re about to do some GOOD EATIN’!!!!” At TABLE, we couldn’t agree more. Check out the newly reopened Strip District store, open daily from 11AM-8PM.
