Wegmans, the regional supermarket chain with more than 100 stores along the East Coast, will debut in the Pittsburgh market as the “anchor tenant” at the Galleria of Mt. Lebanon, according to a press release issued today.

“As we make progress on our first store in the Pittsburgh market in Cranberry Township, we’re thrilled to take another exciting step in the region with the purchase of the Galleria Mall property in Mt. Lebanon,” said Dan Aken, Wegmans vice president of real estate and store planning, in today’s release. “We recognize the significance this property holds for the community and see a tremendous opportunity to give it new life.”

Wegmans first announced its expansion into the Pittsburgh region in 2025. The company broke ground on the approximately 115,000-square-foot Cranberry store in August 2026; construction is now underway.

A New Chapter for the Former Kaufmann’s Site

The property originally opened as a Kaufmann’s department store before becoming an indoor shopping center in 1988.Now, Wegmans and Roadside Development, a Washington, D.C.-based real estate investment and development firm, planto reimagine the two-story property. Their goal is to preserve the Galleria’s character while maintaining its retailenvironment.

“Bringing Wegmans to the former Kaufmann’s site creates an opportunity to build on that history and give residents another reason to make the Galleria part of their everyday lives,” said Jeff Edelstein, president of Roadside Development, also in the press release. “We’re focused on positioning the property for long-term success while honoring the role it has played in the community.”

Pittsburgh’s Growing Grocery Competition

The national grocer isn’t the first to open new storefronts in the area. The Fresh Market took over the former Whole Foods space in East Liberty in March. Meijer, a Michigan-based grocery chain best known for its supercenters, announced it had begun purchasing properties in Western Pennsylvania and has since submitted a plan for a location in Cranberry Township.

Roadside Development and Wegmans expect to begin renovations at the Galleria in 2028. Other retailers are expected to remain open during the process (with the exception of the AMC Mount Lebanon 6 movie theater, which closed last weekend). Additional details about the Galleria’s redevelopment will be announced as plans progress.
