About the Exhibition:
A Fine Intoxication: Gathering Glass documents the history and career of Kathleen Mulcahy, one of Pennsylvania’s preeminent glass artists and a co‑founder of Pittsburgh Glass Center. The exhibition features Mulcahy’s work from 2001 to the present, alongside works by Ron Desmett (deceased), her significant partner in developing PGC.
Mulcahy’s work captures fleeting, emotional moments in nature—especially water—through luminous, sculptural glass. Inspired by her early connection to the sea and a transformative encounter with molten glass, she creates pieces that balance beauty with urgency. Her work reflects on environmental fragility, human connection, and global tensions.
“As an avid kayaker, a storm came upon the river suddenly. In its wake it left me with a moment of pure joy, of wonder, that I work to recreate in my drop installations,” says Mulcahy.
